I didn't notice till afterward the instruction that I should have first *deleted* all Fitaly-related programs.

This means FitalyStamp and FitalySetup.

The most important part is to disable before deleting. So if you did delete FitalyStamp before reinstalling, you did the correct thing. (To simplify, we suggest deleting both but deleting FitalySetup is not essential: it will be overriden by the new one.)

One thing I'd rather not do is delete my FitalyCustomSlidesDB file, and the DB file that controls the application bar. I've customized these very heavily. Of course, I could if need be overwrite them, then restore them from a backup. But is it possible to do a clean install of the upgrade -- WITHOUT deleting these important customization files?

You do not need to delete the data bases. At least this is what this most excellent :) documentation says -- see link below. The only case where you would delete them is if you wanted to remove FS completely from a machine.
