There is something attractive in Erwin's alternative with smaller round corners. It am getting the feeling that something might be lurking there but yet, it is not completely clear. To facilitate the comparison, here are again the two alternatives:

My impression is that there is an overall clarity in the alternative and yet it is not as easy to distinguish the buttons as you can see in the two fragments below:

Where the alternative may appear clearer are on the borders and especially where we have facing border:
CurrentAlternative 1

So it may be interesting to see what would happen by using the border of Alternative 1 and the current center - shown below as Alternative 2 - or even going to completely flat panel borders while keeping the current center - shown below as Alternatives 3. Finally, Altenative 4 is a variation of 3 with a more consistent treatment of buttons along the borders.

Altogether, I am not quite sure whether this is worth changing. On subjects like this, I usually like to let them rest for some time until a clear intuition emerges.
