Productivity

Regarding productivity statistics, what is the key thing to be watching for to gauge your progress, i.e., characters per keystroke, productivity gain, percent saved.

I realize there are a lot of variables involved with my next question, but could someone give me an idea of what would be considered average, good, excellent as far as productivity gain or characters per keystroke? I know the higher, the better, but I don't even have a clue if I am even in the ballpark yet.
